If you want to milk a cow, look elsewhere, because Sheldon Farmhouse is for entertaining!
Early last Century, Henry Lee Higginson, founder of the Boston Symphony, assembled a dairy and
timber farm on the shores of Lake Champlain. Sheldon Farmhouse is the focal point of that farm.
Higginson hired Superintendent Harry W. Albee, a self-educated man who didn't want to be a
"dollar a day man," and so had become an expert woodsman, cattleman, and farmer. From Maine, knowledgeable
in history, and a great story-teller, Albee was a kind-hearted man who was always willing to help those in need.
Albee and Higginson bred and showed purebred Ayrshires that won championship at fairs in Milwaukee,
Chicago, Toronto, Springfield, and Buffalo, which made Sheldon Farm renowned as an outstanding Ayrshire breeding farm.
Around 1940, the Higginson family sold the farm to Albee, who, instead, chose to raise notable Hereford beef cattle.
In 1959, his widow sold the property to the Heurich family of Washington, DC, the current owner.
